How to measure roof area

A roof estimate gets sharper when you separate house footprint from actual roof surface area.

Start with the footprint

Measure the building length and width at the eaves, then split complex roofs into simple rectangles before adding them together.

Account for pitch

Roof surface area grows as pitch increases. If you do not know the pitch, use a contractor measurement or treat your first number as a floor, not a final answer.

Add complexity and waste

Dormers, valleys, hips, and cut-up geometry create more cuts and material waste than a simple gable roof.

Use the number well

For planning, enter the roof surface area into the roofing calculator and keep a reserve for decking or flashing issues that measurements cannot reveal.
